St. John the Baptist Church, also known as ‘Sao Joao Baptista Igreja em Pilerne’ in Portuguese, is a significant religious site in Pilerne, North Goa. Founded initially as a chapel in 1658 by Frei Diogo de Santa Clara, the church has undergone reconstruction twice to stand as the impressive structure it is today. This church is dedicated to St. John the Baptist, whose feast is celebrated with great fervor on the 24th of June.
Architecture and Features
The church complex includes a grotto of Our Lady of Fatima and houses five altars. The main altar is dedicated to St. John the Baptist, while the other four honor St. Anthony, Our Lady of Piety, Our Lady of Mount, and the Holy Souls. The affiliated chapels are:

Feast of St. John the Baptist (San Joao)
The feast of St. John the Baptist, locally known as San Joao, is celebrated on June 24th with vibrant and joyful festivities. It commemorates the biblical account of John the Baptist leaping in his mother Elizabeth’s womb at the news of Jesus’ birth. The celebration includes villagers jumping into wells, singing ‘San Joao,’ and parading in brightly decorated boats called Sangodd, singing Mandos and religious hymns. Newly married couples and families with newborns often bring gifts of seasonal fruits and participate in the lively dances and songs.
