Nestled in Piedade on Divar Island, the Church of Our Lady of Piety is one of the earliest Christian structures in Goa. Situated approximately 10 km from Panjim Kadamba Bus Stand, 30 km from Vasco Da Gama Railway Station, and 22 km from Mapusa, this church stands as a testament to Goa's rich religious and cultural heritage.

Historical Background

Initially built as a chapel in 1541 and reconstructed in 1625, the church as it stands today was constructed between 1700 and 1724. It was designed by a Goan priest in the Indian baroque style. This style is reflected in the intricate floral patterns and motifs adorning both the exterior and interior, giving the church its ethereal white appearance.

Architectural Highlights

Inside the church, visitors can marvel at the captivating stuccowork, baroque plaster embellishments, and wooden paintings depicting the life of St. Francis of Assisi. The main altar houses a large statue of St. Francis of Assisi and an equally substantial crucifix of Jesus.

Historical Anecdote

One of the unique stories associated with this church involves a captain who, in a moment of peril on a sinking ship, vowed to donate the ship's bell to the first village or town he reached if he survived. His ship made it to Divar Island, where he fulfilled his promise. However, the bell's powerful tolling shattered nearby windows and houses, leading to its exchange with the bell from the Se Cathedral.

The annual feast is celebrated with great fervor on the second Sunday of May. This event attracts many devotees and visitors, adding to the church's vibrant community spirit.
