St. Elizabeth of Portugal Church, known locally as "The Ucassaim Church" or "Santa Isabel de Portugal Igreja em Ucassaim," is a historic church located in the village of Ucassaim, North Goa. Founded by Franciscans between 1618 and 1628, the church stands as a testament to Goa's rich colonial and religious history. Despite being destroyed by a cyclone in 1708, the church was rebuilt the same year and remains intact to this day.

Architecture and Art

The church is a beautiful example of Mannerist architecture with Rococo elements, featuring a curved gable topped with a crown above an icon and a bell tower on its left. A striking statue of Christ the King graces the church's facade. Inside, the church houses three altars. The main altar centers around a statue of St. Elizabeth, the Queen of Portugal, and includes the sanctuary for the Blessed Sacrament. The right altar features a statue of the Crucified Jesus, flanked by St. Anne and St. Anthony, while the left altar showcases Our Lady of Health with statues of St. Joseph and St. Sebastian. The pulpit, used for sermons, is affixed to the right wall.

St. Elizabeth Church is a prominent spiritual center for the local community. It hosts the grand feast of St. Elizabeth every first Sunday of July, drawing numerous devotees. The church also features the Holy Cross Chapel in St. Anthony’s Ward, Ucassaim.
