The Ramnath Temple, located in the serene village of Ramnathim, Bandivade, South Goa, is a profound symbol of the unity between Lord Vishnu (Hari) and Lord Shiva (Hara). This historic temple, like many others in Goa, was relocated to its present site to escape religious persecution.

A Historical Overview

History of Shri Ramnath Mandir

The original idol of Lord Ramnath was first installed in Loutolim by the Gaud Saraswat Brahmins, who had migrated from Rameshwar in Southern India. To protect the deity from the Portuguese, the idol was moved to its current location in Bandivade. This migration highlights the resilience and dedication of the devotees in preserving their religious heritage.

Architectural Highlights

The Shri Ramnath Mandir stands out with its distinctive architectural features. The temple complex includes a striking five-storied lamp tower (deepstambh) in the courtyard, adorned with images of Hindu saints at its base. Unlike many other Goan temples, the Ramnath Temple has no pillars and features a special gallery for women.

The entrance to the inner sanctum is embellished with beautiful silver metal scenes from Hindu epics. These depict devotees worshipping a Shiva Linga and Lord Vishnu with his consort, Goddess Lakshmi, seated on his couch.
